Friday Fragments

Mommy's Idea

~ Reading:  I had been trying to read "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", but gave up when I saw that Netflix has it on their "instant watch" lineup.  It's in Swedish with English subtitles, but it was a much easier read than the book!  I think I had a hard time because I had it in paperback and they made the print so very little.  (No, this doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I'm getting older and may have to stop denying that I may need a little help in that department!)

~ Crazy.  Did y'all hear about the 10 year old kids in Arizona the other day?  There was a big gust of wind and one of the kids ended up 2 houses down, on the roof.  I haven't heard anything else, other than the child was in the hospital, so if anybody has any information, please share!

~ Sporadic.  Does anybody else have this problem?  There are weeks when I find it hard to get out a post every day during the week, but then there are other times when I can't seem to stop writing.  Like this week.  I had Tuesday's, Thursday's, and this post written before the day I posted them.  Now I'm wondering if I don't have another post or 2 stockpiled in my blog somewhere.

~ Confused.  The other day I was listening to a Christian Radio station.  They asked for people who did good deeds and gave time to charities to let them know.  There is a Christian musician from Nashville who is sponsoring a contest:  he will join the winner and work alongside him/her as well as give a concert.  That very same day, Father Christian posted this scripture:
Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. (Matthew 6:1-4)
I knew there was some reason the spot on the radio made me uncomfortable.  While I think it's neat that the musician will be joining someone with their charitable work, I think it would've been better if they asked for people to nominate someone that they knew who were doing good things.

  1. I completely agree with you about the contest you heard on the radio. That would make me uncomfortable, as well. I did not hear about the kids in Arizona. Scary stuff! I guess I should really keep up with the news better than I do. You are not the first person that I've heard say that they had problems getting into that book....and yet it's so popular?!

    Have a wonderful weekend! Candace

  2. I know what you mean about finding the time to do daily blog posts. My blogging is, in a sense, part of my work in communications (it's great doing something you love). However, we have so much else coming in that needs immediate attention or meeting deadlines that to do a post daily is often impossible. On Tuesday, however, I had just finished all the articles needed to write or edit for our internal newsletter and realized that some of them would make good blog posts. Gave me such a feeling of accomplishment to pop them in as drafts and have one each day to post!

  4. I think the wonderful thing about blogs is that we can write whenever we want. I am like you in that I have weeks when I can't seem to write enough, and I have weeks when it seems like I'm talking about the wind just to get something posted. Because we're not making a living doing this, we can do what we want!!

  5. Are those the kids who were inside the bouncy castle that lifted off? I think that's what happened which doesn't make it any less frightening.

I just bought my first official pair of glasses. I broke down and went to the doc and got a prescription...no more drug store readers for me. I was wearing them too much and decided I needed a little style!

    Have a nice weekend!

  6. Sitting here in bed with David's laptop...yes, I have already napped:)...I agree with the charity thing. They should have had a nomination program instead. BTW, I'm loving your sage background with the light purple trim and flowers.

  10. I'd be with you Mary. I would feel a bit uncomfortable with that contest too. When I choose to serve, give, etc I really want to be as anonymous as possible and not draw too much attention to myself; knowing God sees what I'm doing and that is all that really matters

I hadn't heard of the 10 y/o in Arizona, but it does sound a bit scary!

    hope you have great weekend!

  11. I tried to watch the Girl... but couldn't. I went between emotional manipulated (angry) and total boredom. After maybe a half-hour or so I stopped watching.

  12. I think the thing that occurs to me about the charity contest is that it gives someone who volunteers with a little known charity a chance to highlight that charity itself...I had to giggle. What if they pick someone who is part of a knitting group that provides blanket babies for crisis pregnancy centers or caps for chemo patients -- what the heck is some big time musician gonna do to help with that? Sing the stitches along? hee hee

  13. Agree wholeheartedly with the last two!
