The Mother of All Hodgepodges

1. Share something you appreciate (or something you appreciated as you were growing up) about your mother.
I appreciate the fact that she was a stay-at-home mom for 10 kids without going insane!  She would get up every morning & pack our school lunches and fix my dad's breakfast.

2.  A quote most commonly ascribed to Plato reads "Necessity is the mother of invention." When did this last play out in your own experience?
I've got nothing for this one.

3. Share one of the earliest memories you have from childhood.
I was talking to someone the other day, and my "batman slippers" were brought up.  When we had green beans, I would wear them to the table and put them in my slippers so I wouldn't have to eat them.

4. When did you last 'hit the mother lode'? What was it?
A while back, I got online and got a boat-load of Bath & Body Works lotions for under $50.  My favorite (which is now discontinued) was $2/bottle, AND I had a code for buy 2, get one free.  I ended up with 6 of them!

5. What is/was your favorite dish mom made? Do you make that dish for your family/friends now that you're all grown up?
This isn't my favorite, but every Friday we would have Tuna Casserole (a.k.a. "Catholic Casserole") or fish sticks with mac & cheese and peas.  I made the casserole once, and CH could barely stand it!  We have fish sticks every now & then, but not a favorite!

6. Mother May I? was at one time a popular children's game. It required no equipment or parts to play. What was your favorite childhood game where you could just turn up and play-no gear needed?
In the summers, neighborhood kids would come to our house for Kick the Can or Hide & Seek.  Good times!

7. Which TV mom (past or present) is your favorite, and why?
Claire Huxtable.  She had a career, kept up with the kids, and kept (or tried to keep!) Cliff in line.  All while looking beautiful and joking about it.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
Who is taking advantage of the Billy Joel station on Sirius?  He is just amazingly talented.  I'm loving hearing the backstories on his songs, and where he got the inspiration for them.  The only time I'm tempted to turn the station is when they play a cover.  Honestly, nobody, and I mean nobody should be singing his songs except for him.  Not Barbra Streisand, not Englebert Humperdinck. I just cringe when those come on!
(After I put that in, I saw a video of his daughter singing "Just the Way you Are", and it was pretty good.  So maybe, just maybe, she would be the only person who could cover one of his songs!)
This has got to be one of my favorite Billy Joel songs:
Did you know this was written after his daughter was born, and that it's about his daughter...not a woman?

  3. Batman slippers? How funny!

I made fish sticks quite often when DD was a child (so quick and easy ... my favorite way to cook, even now). Only when she was an adult, did she tell me that she got so sick and tired of fish sticks!

  4. That was a pretty tricky way to get rid of the green beans! LOL Our son hid a pork chop which we didn't find until months later! How could you stand to walk on those squishy green beans??

  5. I saw Billy Joel in concert many years ago, back in college - he was amazing! And how cool that Temptation is about his daughter - I never knew that! Your batman slippers story is hilarious!

  8. Loved your comments. I hid lima beans in my shoes. At school I hid them in empty milk cartons....until Laurie Nugent told the teacher....and she poured them out and made me eat them. I hate lima beans to this day.

So far, I've seen no one with an answer to the 2nd answer -we're not creative people :)

  13. Wow, I am impressed with your mom raising 10 children. That's funny about your green beans. I remember many nights when I was at the table for hours because I wouldn't eat my veggies....now I love them! Yes Claire was amazing. Happy Mother's Day to you.....

  14. 10 kids? Wow, that's amazing! Your mom must have been Wonder Woman. It seems my mother would make fish sticks every now and then, but I always got them at school at least once a week and that was one of my favorites. I never had tuna casserole, though. I like tuna so I probably would like that, too. I did not know this little tid-bit about Billy Joel. In fact, I don't remember this song. It released in 1986 and that year I was putting in a lot of OT at work, so much of it was a blur. It's great to visit you today. It's been a long time. Hopefully, I won't miss out on playing another week of Wednesday Hodgepodge again! Have a Happy Mother's Day! ;-)

  15. Just catching up on some of your older posts, and omg, the Billy Joel station is on ALL the time in my car! I have loved him forever! Saw him in concert for the first time in the late 1970's!
