Memory Monday: My First Home

Retired Not Tired Memory Monday
Retired Not Tired started this meme after her mother encouraged her to write her memoirs. She'll give a different prompt every week to help you record your own memories!
This week:  My First Home
The house that my family lived in when I was born, is actually on a street just around the corner from the street where I now live. It is a very small house that the plant built when they developed the Small Town. By small, I mean a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with a small living room & kitchen. What's the big deal about that? I am the 8th child. In fact, I was the 8th child in 9 years. I just can't imagine having 8 children living in a house that small.
I don't remember much about that first home; my parents moved to their present home when I was 9 months old. I've heard a story about one of my sisters running in the kitchen after cutting her leg. This was right after my mama mopped the floor. My sister was met at the door by mama telling her to stay outside because the floor had just been mopped.
This picture would have been taken the Christmas before I was born. Mama would have been 6 months pregnant with me:
This would have been a month or 2 before I was born:
(That is the sister who cut her leg!)
This picture was taken in the backyard. Mama is holding me:
I'm sure my older siblings have wonderful memories of living in that house. Our next-door-neighbor took good care of my mom, who was a thousand miles away from her parents & siblings, and must have been terribly homesick at times.

  1. My mother is the oldest girl of nine and she tells stories of raising twin boys with no running water or electricity on the farm. Loved your story and thanks for joining Memory Monday.

  2. I'll bet that "small" house was mighty cozy. ;-)

  3. I enjoyed reading your memories. I'll agree with Kathy, I'll be things could get pretty "cozy" with that many children an only three bedrooms and one bathroom--especially the one bathroom.

  4. Wow, that's a lot of kids. I would have enjoyed having more. I think. I really had such fun with four, I imagine 4 more would have either quadrupled my joy or killed me. LOL

  6. Gee. And I thought that three kids in a three bedroom, one bath house was kind of a tight fit. But I bet you have some funny stories being from such a large family. How wonderful! Thanks for sharing the pictures, too. The last one looks like you all were ready for Easter!

  7. Those are sweet family photos. I can't imagine 9 children all so close together and the one bathroom. I thought it was bad that we had one bathroom in our house. We were a family of 5 including our parents!
