Ho-Ho-Hodgepodge

1.  Share your traditions surrounding the Christmas stocking.
I mentioned the other day that we didn't have a fireplace in the house where I grew up, so we put our stockings on our bedposts.  Our stocking loot consisted of a tangerine, nuts, and candy.
Our boys always have a pair of wool socks, chapstick, candy, and little odds & ends in their stockings.  They are the first thing they get into on Christmas morning.  Oh!  And I always get a "chick-flick" in mine...and it's amazing that Santa always knows just which one to get me!

2.  How many hours of sleep do you average at night?  Is it enough?
I probably average around 8 hours.  I think it's enough most of the time, but lately, with all of the sickness going around, it seems like maybe it's not.

3.  If you had to give up one thing for the remainder of this year what would it be?
Gee, I have no idea.  I'm pretty much given up sugar, I don't really drink, don't smoke, don't (hardly) curse, so I have no idea.

4.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (or Wills and Kate as I like to call them) have announced they're expecting a baby. Do you follow news of the Royals?
If I hear it, I follow them.  I don't seek it out, though.

5.  For me,  the sound of childhood is__________________.
Kids laughing and playing in their yards during the summer.

6.  Fruit cake-yay or boo? What's your favorite dessert made with fruit?
Boo.  I think my mom used to make a mean fruit cake...heavy on the bourbon.  Favorite dessert with fruit: just give me straight up fruit.

7. What is one thing you want to accomplish before 2012 comes to an end?
I realized that I'm 3 books away from completing the Reading Challenge.  I'd like to think I can accomplish it, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make it.  I thought 20 books in one year was doable. Where has the time gone?

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
All of the decorations are up.  YS put the tree up, and CH put the lights on for me, so that was most of the frustration.  Everything that I usually put up is in place.  I bought some pre-lit garland for outside, but I have to figure out how I'm going to put it up.  And then there's the small issue of not having any outside outlets.  I still think it's weird that we don't have any, but I guess 50 years ago it wasn't important to have them.

  1. I love to read...but I tend to doze off at night [my reading time] so I could not even begin to think of a book reading challenge!! How many have you read to get to needing 3 more?

  2. We added two outlets to our driveway pillars this year so we could light them up. They already had lights in them, but no outlets.

Santa is so smart! Pretty sure its the woman behind the man, so to speak : )

  3. My daughters get small, practical gifts in their stockings-chap stick, tights, etc. About the same answer for #5.

  4. Just get 3 SMALL books & get your goal! ;)

  5. How funny that Santa just seems to know what movie to get you. ha!

With this cold, I've been getting over 9 hours of sleep each night ... I know my body needs it, but I sure miss my early mornings.

Hard to believe that back in the day, no one needed outlets outside. ;-)

  7. We didn't have a fireplace either so we hung our stockings on the knobs of the radio. Once they were filled, they had to be taken down so they wouldn't break the knobs off. We also usually got fruit of some kind--often tangerines. And usually a deck of children's cards. I think I had more decks of Old Maids than anyone else!

  8. My decor is not up. I have set my table....but nothing else. Just don't have the drive right now. Our number 5 answer was the same. Always was and still is one of my favorite sounds.

  9. Santa is one smart cookie to bring you chick flicks...what woman wouldn't love that? Isn't it such a relief to get your Christmas decorating done? Now, if I could just say the same about my shopping!

  10. I always get a chick flick in my stocking, too. I must say...your countdown at the top of the page has just thrown me into panic mode....so much to do yet!

  11. Don't beat yourself up over those last 3 books. To have read 17 books while holding down a full time job is an accomplishment in itself!

Once again, I enjoyed reading your stocking stories :)

We have two outside outlets, but somehow they never seem to be quite enough.

  12. I love reading too. My goal was 50 books...definitely not going to make that. What was I thinking! haha

Wish my decorations were finished....hopefully this weekend.

  13. I am so glad I have time to read since I retired however I have so many knitting projects to get done for Christmas that reading will have to wait. I can always cozy up when it is cold outside in January.

  14. I can't wait to be finished with the decorating inside the house. Now when they build homes they put outlets in the eves. I put laughter too!

  15. I find if I'm reading a book I really like I can read pretty quickly and a larger number a year sounds easy. Right now I'm in the middle of a longer book that I'm finding more and ore boring, which makes it seem longer. Now I'm not sure I'll finish it before the end of the year. )But I really want to be done with it because the next planned book is one I'm looking forward to reading!)

It seems like candy and chap stick are pretty big traditions, mine too! Another common theme, me too, seems to be that we all love the sound of kids outside. LOL

  16. I like you on the royals- I watch it if I hear it but I don't seek it out either. My grandmother made a good fruitcake- not near as heavy as most. We're almost finished decorating...and then, before we know it, it'll be time to take it all down. Sigh.

  17. I love a good book challenge, but some years I just can't meet the goal (or I set it too high). You're very close, though, reading over 15 books in a year is nothing to shake a stick at! :)

  18. Go you with the decorations! I don't have anything up yet and don't know if I'll get around to it!

  19. Those 3M hooks (all sizes and shapes) are great! Not sure on the lights except don't they make those adapters you can plug right into the porch light socket? I think that is what my mom does??

  20. 20 books in a year? I wonder how many I've read in the past year? I doubt re-reading books I love over and and over and over and over counts? lol Probably not. ;)
