Indian Head

This is a picture from my childhood: Of hot summer days spent in the Great Smoky Mountains to escape the heat since we didn't have air conditioning.  This reminds me of windows rolled down, eagerly searching for this:
The Indian Head.  It really is just a rock overlooking Little River Road,  but doesn't it look like an Indian? Seeing it reminded me of the Cherokee Indians that once roamed over this land, and it also made me a little sad thinking about how they were driven from their land.
Here is what the rock looked like 3 years ago:

In 2008, the Indian Head Rock got a facelift. Basically, they glued the face on it and nailed the rock to the side of the mountain.   I don't know about you, but I can't see the Indian anymore.  It definitely doesn't look like it did 40 years ago, but then again, what does?

  1. Why did the Rock get a facelift? Seems a shame ... especially since it doesn't look like they were able to maintain the Indian's face. :-(

    1. The face was beginning to crumble, causing a hazard to the cars traveling on the road. :(

  4. We always called it the Indian Head too. That is a precious memory of mine as well. I'll look this week while we are visiting and let you know if I can still see the face!

    1. I thought it was just us that called it that, but apparently it's a pretty big landmark. When I googled it, I was directed to a Knoxville News-Sentinel article about the facelift, and they called it "Indian Head".

  5. It did change when they did the face lift on it; prior to it, I could never see the Indian's head. Looked like a nice place to visit to escape the heat of summer.
