Back in the Wednesday Hodgepodge

I'm really, really going to try to get back in the swing of blogging. What better way than to participate in the Hodgepodge that Joyce hosts almost every week?

1. What's a phrase your mother often said to you? If you're a parent, is this something you now say to your own children?
Offer it up to the poor souls in purgatory. Mama would say that to us when we complained about something. I don't know that I've ever said that to my boys.

2. What is a scent you associate with your mother or your childhood home?
This going to sound weird, but I don't know what the scent is that reminds me of cold Saturday nights, having just had a bath, and mama mopping the floor. I think it may be ham.

3. What's an activity you remember always doing with your mother (or someone who was a mother figure in your life)?
Mama was the organist at Church for about 40 years. I remember being allowed to sit in the choir loft with her during Mass. I remember watching her in awe using the foot pedals on the organ.

4. Flared jeans, maxi dresses, and jumpsuits are 70's fashion trends back this spring. Are you on board? Which trend would you be most inclined to try? For the men...flared corduroys, wide-collared shirts, and floral prints...what say you?
Yuck. I would say maxi dresses; although,  haven't they been back (during the summer, anyway) for a year or two?

5. May 6th is Teacher Appreciation Day and also Nurse Appreciation Day. Is there a nurse or teacher  you have especially appreciated along the way? Tell us why?
All of them! Once I started working in the schools, I began to appreciate all of them for putting up with me!

6. If I came by your house, what would I find on your frig door?
Fingerprints and smudges. We have a stainless steel refrigerator, so that's all that's on it!

7. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana made her royal entrance on Saturday, May 2nd. On a scale of 1-10, how much attention did you give to all the news coverage? 1=Who's Charlotte? 10=sat glued to the telly, cuppa in hand.
Since I know who Charlotte is, I'll give it a "2".

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
Not to be a Debbie-Downer, but this is the first Mother's Day without my Mama.  Mother's Day hasn't really ever been a big deal. I'm just not sure how I'm going to feel on Sunday. Last Sunday, we had a Mother/Daughter Tea at Church. It was so sweet to see the little girls with their dresses (and some hats).  I took pictures with my big girl camera of the event.

  1. I'm joining in for the first time today and it is a good way of getting back to blogging. I hope Sunday isn't too hard for you - the "firsts" can be difficult to get through. Nice memory of being in the choir loft.

  2. Mother's Day without a living mother is strange. My mother has been gone for 12 years now and I still think it's odd that I don't have her here - to buy a card for her, to take her to lunch. But, I certainly think of her on Mother's Day... and thank her for making me who I am.

  3. Mother's Day without a mother to honor feels a bit empty, especially the first one.
I hope you are able to enjoy the day,
I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your mother/daughter tea :)

  5. It is always hard to lose a mom. I hope you'll have a sweet Mother's Day even so. Your mom sounds like she was a busy and much-needed woman in the church! Loved that first answer. :-)

  6. Oh Mary, just be prepared for tears on Mother's Day. You will get through it, but it will be a tough day. I love the memory of you sitting at the bench watching your mom playing the organ :)

  7. What a beautiful memory of your mother. That brought back a few memories for me. I remember my mother's beautiful voice standing next to her in church. That tea looks lovely. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as you miss your mother this Mother's Day. ((HUGS))

  8. I am with you on the first time without mama. I lost my mama last month. I could really do with this day just being another day. Wound is way too fresh. I am from a very small town too (800 people). This is my first time doing Hodgepodge!

  9. I used to love the Mother Daughter events at church to celebrate Mother's Day. My mom has been gone since 1995, but missing them never goes away completely. Treasure the sweet memories. I enjoyed your Hodgepodge!!
